It seems like today, everyone is using Botox or Dysport to control wrinkles. The reason it's such a popular treatment is because it works so well!
Botox and Dysport are FDA approved for use in the glabella lines between the eyebrows. However, the medication is commonly used off label to be place in other areas of the face and neck. Most practitioners don't have the skill or experience required to inject in the lower face and neck, so you don't hear too much about it. We really love what we do and have refined our techniques over the years to get you the results! For example, a little under the eyes helps with fine lines and is great for those who have "bug eyes" that wish to reduce the tense skin. A little placed just outside the lip border prevents and softens lip lines (smoker's lines) and can give a pout to the lip. A little on the sides of the chin helps with turned down mouth corners. For those who have a gummy smile or a nose tip that is turned down a little goes a long way. It can also be placed in the chin to reduce dimples. In the neck, it relaxes tense bands that contribute to the turkey neck look. We also inject for migraines into the scalp, for pain and excessive sweating.
In the common areas, (glabella, forehead, crows feet) an average of 3 months. In the lower face from 6-8 weeks, in the neck an average of 5-6 months.
For Botox; the average woman needs 20 units per muscle group (20 units glabella, 20 units crows, 20 units forehead), some may require more or less depending on the thickness of your muscles. In the neck from 30-40 units. Men require double the dose as their muscles are stronger and thicker requiring more medication to relax them completely.
For Dysport; 30 to 50 units per muscle group in the average woman. Men may take 50-80 units of Dysport per muscle group.
Many factors determine your dosage, the thickness of your muscles, shape of your face and musculature anatomy, how much movement you want or don't want (movement causes wrinkles). Your lifestyle and body chemistry also plays a part. Smokers tend to need more and it lasts less. Those who practice hot yoga or perform hours of intense exercise regularly metabolize the product faster. Everyone's body chemistry is different, even from moment to moment.
Both medications produce a relaxation of the muscle. The main difference is Botox takes 5-7 days to start working and gets stronger up to 14 days. Dysport takes 24-72 hours to start working and gets stronger up to one week.
The medication works by blocking nerve impulses to the muscle. This reduces the muscle activity that causes the lines on the skin to form. Over weeks the lines fade as the skin no longer contracts.
If you have very subtle lines then right away, within 3 weeks they should fade. Moderate lines take longer 4-5 weeks, very deep lines take 5-7 weeks and will typically require repeat treatment immediately when the medication wears off to get them to fade completely. Some very deep lines can have Restylane placed in them to help smooth them, as well as chemical peels to soften the crevice. Some people notice improvement in their lines by 3 weeks on average. During your consultation you'll be given approximate time for improvement for your particular lines.
Right after injection you will have some little red bumps that look like mosquito bites. They go away in a few minutes. You can apply makeup. Other common side effects are bruising. We recommend you stop taking aspirin, fish oils, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba and any supplement that can cause you to bruise for at least 72 hours before injection.
It takes about 5 minutes. Yes you can do it on your lunch break. If you are a first time customer you'll have another 5 minutes of paperwork to fill out first, a quick 5 minute consultation and you can be in and out within 20-30 minutes.
Most patients tolerate the procedure very well. You may feel a slight stinging sensation and pressure when the muscle is injected, lasting only seconds. We can prescribe a topical anesthetic to use before treatment.
